Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Reduce the number of printers you use by networking existing printers and sharing them. Ensure that any printers purchased can print on both sides of the paper in order to reduce paper usage. Reduce the number of servers you use through virtualisation. When you have to replace equipment or add new equipment then use energy efficient equipment which will go into a low power standby mode when not being used and don’t forget to turn off equipment overnight if it is not being used, thereby reducing your energy needs further. Consider implementing network-wide software or policies which will shut down equipment overnight.

Reuse equipment – for example, older PCs can be given a new lease of life as a thin-client device (although older devices are less energy efficient there is a smaller impact on the environment if you can avoid purchasing new equipment). Consider donating PCs to a reputable charity such as Computer Aid International so that they will be reused in developing countries. Old servers can be reused in a Virtual Infrastructure as management and backup servers and do not have to be discarded.

Recycle whatever cannot be reused – manufacturers have recycling and take back schemes and organisations exist which deal properly with e-waste according to WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) legislation. Ensure your e-waste does not end up in landfill. Depending on how old your equipment is the manufacturer may have a legal obligation to take back your old hardware. When you replace your toner cartridges you will find a label inside the box enabling you to send back the old cartridge for recycling at no cost to you.
